Notorious Honor Number 2

What is going on with this country?

First, the U.S. ranks number 4 in the world for executing its own citizens (see my post "Notorious Honor").

Now, the BBC reports that the U.S. jails more of its citizens than any other country. (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/4481261.stm). More than f'ing China that has over a billion people! One in 138 American citizens is now in jail. Our tax dollars are being used to build more prisons than colleges to make room for non-violent drug offenders.

Speaks volumes about our culture and where it is going.

I hope you're saying that our culture is such that it causes more to act in a criminal manner and not that we as a country are merely imprisoning more people for "crimes" that should not be treated as such.

Personally, I think we're becoming a nation of pansies. Between issues like "political correctness", spanking is child abuse, the booming increase in children diagnosed with ADD and ADHD (and medicated with Ritalin for it), and child soccer leagues where "we don't keep score because we don't want kids to feel badly that they lost", I feel like going out and beating someone up ... well, maybe only if that person doesn't play my kid in a game. What happened to learning about accountability?

McDonald's didn't make you fat!!! You put those three Big Macs in your own damn mouth!!!!

I am saying both. I don't think it should be a crime to smoke marijuana. If you aren't hurting anyone else, there is no reason to make it a crime. If you want to hurt yourself, have a ball. That's what freedom is.

I also think the culture is making people more criminal. That is what is glorified on tv, movies, music and politics. Violence. On top of that, economics are bad, which makes people desperate.

You can't create peace by bombing the fuck out of people and you won't have a crime-free safe society by locking everyone away. At some point, you won't have a society anymore or at least you won't have one that you would want to live in.

So, you're pro victimless "crimes"? Does that mean you're also for legalizing prostitution? This is getting into a whole different discussion.

In my opinion, what's needed is early teaching of accountability, consequences and repercussions. You do something wrong, you get punished for it. None of this "timeout" crap. Not an "eye for an eye" rationale, but more of a "Do unto others" and "life will throw you lemons from time to time, suck it up and deal with it" methodology.
I do agree that bombing the bejeezus of a country is not necessarily a way to create peace, but what are other effective alternatives when economic sanctions are decried as crimes against humanity, diplomatic efforts are rebuffed or shrugged off and the leader/country is steadfast in its course?

I do not believe that victimless crimes are crimes. Seems to me there is no justification to punish someone if he hasn't hurt anyone else. If he has hurt himself, that is punishment enough.

The point of the social contract that underlies a democratic society is to protect each person's property and physical liberty from the intrusion of others. That's how you keep order in society. Once we legislate what people do to themselves, we intrude on the right to privacy.
