I'm very glad Paul is out there and being heard, but reducing our country to near anarchy and making this a totally unregulated, survival of the fittest, dog eat dog and every man for himself society is as ideologically blind an idea as Communism.
In a way, yes. I think the idea that markets and corporations do an adequate job of self monitoring is silly. I think doing away with inspection and regulation of food and medicine is ridiculous. I think that ending public education is suicidal and outrageous. I think ending all income tax will render government all too impotent to do things I think need to be done and will lead to a kind of economic feudalism.
I think his record of voting against abortion rights is inconsistent. I think his refusal to vote against a bill "recognizing the importance of Christmas and the Christian faith" is inconsistent. He voted for allowing the Ten Commandments to be on government property.
He even voted to prohibit minors from obtaining prophylactics without parental notification.
I have libertarian leanings, but I think his are a bit extreme, a bit inconsistent, a bit less pragmatic and more ideological than I could tolerate, even though I agree solidly with him on many things.
I would dearly like to see us moving away from a nanny state or a police state, but to simply deny the government any role in maintaining social justice is too extreme for me.
I've never read the argument that government has no role in maintaining social justice. Indeed, that's probably the only legitimate role for government.
Perhaps the question is what is meant by social justice.
