Peak Water. Sewage Water Coming To A City Near You

Faced with a persistent drought and the threat of tighter water supplies, Los Angeles plans to begin using heavily cleansed sewage to increase drinking water supplies, joining a growing number of cities considering similar measures.

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who opposed such a plan a decade ago over safety concerns, announced the proposal on Thursday as part of a package of initiatives to put the city, the nation’s second largest, on a stricter water budget. The other plans include increasing fines for watering lawns during restricted times, tapping into and cleaning more groundwater, and encouraging businesses and residents to use more efficient sprinklers and plumbing fixtures.

  1. What about peak population?

How come no one's talking about that?

All they focus on is the supply-side...while ignoring the demand-side.

  2. Ooooh - yummy!

I agree; what we do in the name of conservation is so easily overwhelmed by population increase - and increases in affluence.

  3. My neigbors are a "one towel" family, meaning they wash their towels after each use, like at hotels. It's unbelievable to me how much Americans waste.

  4. I have some neighbors who don't seem to wash at all - maybe it all balances out.

  5. I wonder what the breakdown is in water usage... I mean, industrial vs. private homes, lawns vs. drinking water, etc. I've gotta believe that there are ways to conserve.

I live in a flood zone, so water's rarely an issue... yet. The city upriver from us has just put in another dam and is diverting quite a bit of water for their needs, and we're in year 15 of a drought. It's gonna catch up to us soon, even here in the flood zone.
