A Trip To The Darkside

Director Christopher Nolan, reuniting with "Batman Begins" star Bale, told The Associated Press earlier this year that Ledger came through with precisely what he had envisioned for this take on the Joker, "a young, anarchic presence, somebody who is genuinely threatening to the establishment."

"It was though they'd taken the Joker and all the colors, everything of it, and just kind of put him through a Turkish prison for a decade or so," Bale told the AP. "It's like he's gone through that personal hell to come out being this, if you can even call him mad, at the end here."

No wonder Heath Ledger was on prescription drugs. He was "having trouble sleeping", trying to escape the depths of hell to which he traveled for yet another Satanic film from our cultural engineers.

Really? I didn't know method acting was so dangerous to your health.

Come on: we're talking about a guy who made millions by play-acting -- pretending to be someone else in front of cameras.

Actors have been around for centuries... and to imply that it's a 'hazardous' career field is silly.

Sure, the pharmaceutical companies push their useless drugs on us, but it's not their fault he buys into the crap and takes them because he feels "depressed" -- depressed because he's pretending to be a maniac (while on the set) for a few months.

There are people that perform truly stressful jobs everyday... and have far more serious problems. I'm not gonna put blame on "big pharma"; our "culture" or anyone/thing else for his own problems and weaknesses.

BTW -- I'm fairly sick of the comic-book-remake mentality that's taken over Hollywood. However, the reviews I've read are excellent so I'll likely have to go see the flick.

This isn't about blame. It's about acknowledging that taking a trip to the darkside is often one which allows no return. Just like all those drugged-up soldiers who left their souls back in Iraq.

I have an emotional attachment to the characters, and of course they take on a new meaning off of the page and out of a childs' imagination and redone for a tragedy obsessed audience.

Insanity is often rewarded. Poets are popular after their death, actors after they cheat and do drugs -- and we all know that when people play or joke about things there is some internal truth they are pulling from.

heath had issues, playing an insane killer clearly did not help. going to watch that is going to be hard as good as we think

no...

Playing make-believe-psychotic on a film set for 10min at a pop is nothing like spending 12 months in mortal danger.
(I'm not an actor, but I've done extra work ... actors walk outta their "mobile home", "work" for 30-40 min on a scene, then go back and chit-chat for an hour or two)

Even suggesting the two are remotely related is ridiculous. Acting is not hazardous to your health...

some people are weaker than others: period.

That's not a judgment - that's just statistics.. the statistics related to 300 million people. Some go crazy working at the post-office... So what?

There's nothing here II... He probably would have been depressed working at a Burger King too...

RR, I think your point is solid, however, there are those critical few, that "can" immerse themselves inside a character. Still immersing yourself, no matter how deeply, cannont compare to living it day after day 7/24.

I agree Mr. Sleep: there are still some 'method actors' -- to coin the phrase.

And while I'm sure there are some psychological implications, I would posit that working 5 days a week in a dead-end yet stressful job (inner-city police officer anyone?) is more likely to result in aberrant behavior than play-acting.

(not to imply that police work is a "dead end" career...)
