The New Face Of Hip Hop
When I get bamboozled into fraternizing with holyrollers, I don't expect to hear hip hop at the otherwise painfully boring events. So, you can imagine what a surprise it was to see a covered chick open up the awards banquet for the Islamic Center of Southern California on Saturday night with two songs she wrote for her upcoming album. And the girl's got skills. And she's a Kurd from Northern Iraq. Very cool on many levels.
She, and many others like her, are the new face of hip hop -- Muslim Hip Hop.

I've never been able to handle it, either, to be honest. But my problem isn't the music - I actually like the "sound" of hip-hop - it's the message, the angry hollering, and the pecker-grabbing that bothers me.
I'm gonna have to see if I can download some of this lady's stuff.

Hip hop makes me want to vomit. You don't want your culture bastardized and commoditized like mine has been, trust me. That's what'll happen if Muslim Hip Hop ever gets big.
I love hip hop, but not the crap rap that passes itself off as "hip hop" these days. None of these Muslims artists will ever get very big - definitely not here in the U.S. so I am not too worried about them becoming commoditized. Perhaps they will find an audience abroad.

Islamic Center of Southern California is located on Vermont close to Wilshire blvd. How is Sameer doing He is always teaching the basic principles of Islam on Sunday morning or has someone else took over that function for him.
Yes and did you see Dr. Mahir Hathout and his brother. They are the chief lectures there and they both do tafsir (commentary). Islamic Center of Southern California Is a small Mosque (masjid). It is a nice center it has an up and down stairs meaning only two levels. Do you go there often Intellectual insurgent? Also it has a small book store very good books also on Islam.
Hip Hop has spread to the middle east and Israel Jews have hip hop groups and rappers and so do Palestinians (Palestinian hip hop and rappers) the hip hop of the middle east is political in nature too.
The whole world has embraced hip hop in one form or another. Hip hop can be used for positive or negative depending on the user (rapper hip hop artist).

Nope, haven't been to the ICSC since my mother's funeral and it was probably 10 years before that. Hathout is an interesting guy. For as stuffy as I find him, he has been quite a trailblazer in modernizing Islam and putting women on equal footing in the community. Which Sameer? Chance, are you Muslim or have you been there for events with people you know?
I'm a fan of good music - regardless of genre. Jurassic Five totally changed my mind about Hip Hop. Imageine if all you ever new of Rock was, say, the radio airplay songs. You'd hate Rock too.

I have studied Islam and many religions and I have also studied the esoteric (secret and hidden) side of some those religions. Like sufism and tes I have been to the center many times and no I am not Muslim but I do study all religions and read the holy scriptures of all those religions. So I can relete to people from all religions and racial groups.
Sameer on Sunday mornings around 10:00am gives an introduction to Islam to new people and he has a question and answer section he knows the Quran by memory.
A Hafiz is some one who remembers the Quran by memeory. So Sameer is a Hafiz. I f I am not mistaken a Hafiz is someone he has the Quran down by memory.

It depends on how you define Muslim. :-) My family is Muslim, but my parents aren't particularly religious and did not raise us going to the mosque. My father's morality is heavily influenced by Buddhism and Hinduism as he, like you, studies all religions.
I am an atheist and there are points in the Quran that I do not find credible or sensible to follow, especially with respect to gender differentiation. To be clear, it's no insult to Islam in particular, because I find all religion far-fetched, foolish and inane.
