Muslim Comedy

Yes, it's true. There is such thing as Muslim comedy and it's happening right here in the good ol' US of A. A community that, to date, has been painfully insular is producing comics who poke fun at themselves, their traditions, their community and life in post-9/11 America.

And there is nothing like comedy to bring people together.

Yah know, there's something funny about the subject of comedy. There are black comedians, liberal stand-ups, Asians, gays, you name it. What I can't recall for the life of me is any right-wing comedian.

I guess it's kind of hard to create mirth out of being pissed off all the time.

The former Monday Night Football guy is pretty darn conservative.

He's done a special on HBO, and he filet's the Dem's, although he does honor Kerry's war service.

I'm drawing a blank at the moment on his name.

Where there's humor, there's hope. You can't be afraid of and it's hard to hate anyone who can laugh at himself. Maybe it's because STS is right and madmen aren't funny.

Ahmed is a scream I'm ordering the DVD. Thanks for the link

Are you talking about Irshad Manji? I read her book and, although she makes good points, she is bitter, has rants that go nowhere and she's not a very good writer. All those qualities explain why she is such a darling of the wingnuts.

Reading stuff from disgruntled Muslims leads me to the conclusion that it's not the religion as much as the parents that those people hate. I'm not religious and think religion overall is a whole lot of folly, but I don't hate Islam (anymore than any other religion) the way they do because my parents never rammed it down my throat. Indeed, they did the exact opposite and were quite laissez faire about religion in general.

My parents let me go to church with my friends and I even went to Christian summer camp with my best friend in 9th grade. Even then, I found religion disgusting. The arrogance, the dogma, the hatred. It was appalling then and even more appalling now.

Here is an entertaining study about the link between whiney children and their growth into conservatives -

It makes the point about the need for rules and discipline and your godmother probably fits that mold.

different strokes for different folks. your family environment, I agree, has a lot to do with your attitude.

Let's say I have a strong belief in the way life should be lived which involves many spiritual principles, and despite the fact that I am not a formal practicing Christian, I am much more loyal and consistent to my beliefs, than the hypocritical wingnuts who spout the high and mighty.

Many of the wingnuts are doomed to eternal damnation based upon their actions or lack of action, but the heck with them for now.

There are those that walk the talk, and there are those that don't.

Dennis Miller, the former MNF guy, Mr. Sleep. I think Drew Carey might be conservative, but I'm not sure. I do know there are alot of conservative comics out there, but they don't go shouting it from the rooftops; it'd be like a conservative professor at Berkeley: he or she just wouldn't be advertising.
