I am the person who fits in nowhere and everywhere.

And as the picture focused in, you could see the writing on the headstone, and it gave his awards - Purple Heart, Bronze Star - showed that he died in Iraq, gave his date of birth, date of death, he was 20 years old. And then at the very top of the head stone, it didn't have a Christian cross. It didn't have a Star of David. It has a crescent and star of the Islamic faith.
And his name was Kareem Rashad Sultan Khan. And he was an American. He was born in New Jersey. He was fourteen years old at the time of 9/11, and he waited until he could serve his country and he gave his life.

But isn't part of the problem that the growing of poppies also leads to more misery - let's not romanticize the drug trade too much - and more hunger - when opium dealers/gangsters force non-poppy farmers to grow poppies?

I'm not romanticizing the drug trade. It is what it is, whether it's in Afghanistan or elsewhere unfortunately. My point is that if Europeans and Americans suffer from it, then it's karma.
We reap what we sow.
On the karma we agree.
On the equivalency, not entirely as I'm of the opinion that Afghanis will suffer far more from the drug trade than the Euro-Americans busy consuming the garbage (mostly because consumption is concentrated in the working poor, a group that is usually segregated from everyone else).

I agree with abu Sahara. Whatever misery Europe and the US may suffer from any influx of Afghani opium, it's not going to be the misery of the governing class or of the profiteers who benefit from the "war on drugs."
Our drug policies create thousands of high paying jobs, huge sales of equipment. It's a bonanza for the private prison industry and drug testing firms. If this is a victory for Afghanistan, it's a pyrrhic one.
Bush has no reason to diminish opium production and many reasons to look the other way.
If anyone is harmed by the opium, it's more than likely to be those who had no part in promoting Bush's imperial agenda.
