Random Musings

Today's Friday and I need to lighten things a bit. The following are thoughts that I have been meaning to share:

  • Since the Bible says it is an abomination for a man to lay with another man, does that mean it is okay for a woman to lay with another woman? Is God saying that gay is bad, but lesbians are okay?
  • Can anyone explain to me why Burger King adopted a mascot who looks like a pedophile serial killer to promote its product?
  • Two religious missionary types came kocking at the house last weekend. I told them I was an atheist, I told them I was Muslim, I told them I was Hindu. None of it worked. They were excited to find a heathen to convert. Lesson from my dad. He invites them in and debates them until they beg to leave. Note to self. Tell them you are an evangelical Christian and thump the Bible until you scare them away.
  • What's up with midwestern teenage White boys coming to school with guns? At least in the ghetto, you know who has guns and who will probably kill you. These trenchcoat mafia types are way too unpredictable. It may just be safer to send your kids to school in the ghetto than in Tennessee.
  • Since Pat Robertson speaks to God, I was wondering if he could tell us if Elvis is still alive.
  • What's the big deal about Roe v. Wade? Even if it is overruled, it would be left to the states to decide whether to outlaw it or not and the predictable array of red and blue states will act accordingly.
  • When news organizations do polls, who do they call? The latest poll says only 4 out of 10 Americans believe GW is honest. Who are those four people? We need to know so that we can better direct educational resources to places where they are obviously lacking.
  • If you haven't seen the movie Crash, you should. There are many opinions on its theme -- I thought it was a powerful exposition on redemption.

-I've never been called for a poll. I think there is something fishy about them.

- The movie Crash was good.

Hello II:
I have two biblical passages that come closest to answering the question of homosexuality and lesbianism. One passage is ambiguous with definition, while the other is ambiguous with a term.

1 Corinthians 6:9 (New International Version)

9Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders

II: In this case they are not specifying a gender for the homosexual offenders. Then again, they aren't defining "offense."

Romans 1

26Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. 27In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.

The woman statement is ambiguous, but this is the closest thing I could find. I have always wondered about that too. Funny and good post.

As a queer, I wonder why is homosexuality a sin but eating pork and getting divorced isn't? After all Jesus condemned divorce. I think lesbian sex doesn't gross people out as much as what they think men do.

Tell the missionaries that you are born again, II. It works for me. I just don't tell them that I'm a born again redneck not a Christian.

I watched half of Crash last night but I fall asleep after an hour in front of the TV so I'll watch the rest tonight. So far so good. It seems to me a to be a satire on making assumptions, having stereotypes and being prejudiced.

Adrienne - Some "liberal" bloggers have a funny line going around - "can someone give that guy a blow job already so we can impeach him?" Even if I was single, I couldn't volunteer for that job (no pun intended). :-)

MSR - Thanks for the info. I knew you would come through!

Patrick - How are you Republican and "queer"? Inquiring minds want to know.

II, I'm an American first and queer second or maybe even third or fourth after being a lot of other things that are more important than sex. That's how I can be a Republican.

PS, II, talk about assumptions - I thought you were a guy till I saw a comment of yours the other day which set me straight - well almost. ;)

Patrick -

LOL! Most people assume that I am a guy. Who would believe that someone who goes by II would be a 5'2" 100 lb. chick? :-)

You are right that sex shouldn't be a political issue -- who, how or where (with some restrictions) you have it is no one's business --but the R's make a huge deal out of it as part of their platform. I get your response though and I respect that. It must be add to share the ranks with someone like Pat Robertson, though. Strange bedfellows (no pun intended).

II, Robertson is weird but then so is Jesse Jackson. Both sides have their fair share of nuts.

But I am not for "gay rights."

Random comment for you since another blogger has admited that they thought you were a dude:

Since I met you in person before you were the Intellectual Insurgent, I missed the oppurtunity to assume you were a guy. But now that we have established this trend that much of the blogosphere thinks you are male from your commentary, I wonder how you respond to that assumption. Is it an insult? Does it say anything about the way you write? Does it say anything about bloggers?

Just wondering,
chad

Some Jehovah's Witnesses came to my house not too long ago. I was the only one in the house and I was taking a shower when the doorbell rang. I can look just down out of my bathroom window and talk to whoever is standing directly below me at the front door, so I spied two conservatively dressed women and asked them what I could do for them. They told me they were representing for the Lord and they wanted to kick some knowledge to me about his much anticipated return. I explained to them that I was currently sopping wet in my shower and that if I was coming downstairs to talk with them I would be wrapped only in a towel with beads of water still dancing across my exposed torso. For some reason they declined my offer to look upon all my manly splendor while attempting to convert me.

I invite all of the missionaries in for a visit. I ask a ton of questions. :)

I guess it is my insatiable desire for knowledge in all areas of life.

My greatest joy of learning being in the philosophy arena which is the category that to me Religion belongs or maybe it is the other way around? :)

Chad - I am not sure they assume I am a guy because of my commentary or because of the monniker. I think it's more the latter than the former. Maybe I have a "male" writing style because all of my mentors were men, but I think I write like a lawyer (which people may equate with "male").

It's not an insult at all though. If I don't mention gender, it is amusing to me to see how long it takes for people to catch on. Most do not. Even for those who figure it out, I bet they wouldn't ever pick me out of a crowd.

Mr. Wilson - those women missed out! :-)

FAR - you are just like my dad.

sts,

I'll take the "just like my Dad" as a compliment. :)

Yep, some people think they "know it all" or are afraid of missionaries, but to me I like to always hear what people have to say, even if it might "rock my worldview."

Life is Fun!
