And as the picture focused in, you could see the writing on the headstone, and it gave his awards - Purple Heart, Bronze Star - showed that he died in Iraq, gave his date of birth, date of death, he was 20 years old. And then at the very top of the head stone, it didn't have a Christian cross. It didn't have a Star of David. It has a crescent and star of the Islamic faith.
And his name was Kareem Rashad Sultan Khan. And he was an American. He was born in New Jersey. He was fourteen years old at the time of 9/11, and he waited until he could serve his country and he gave his life.

An instant classic. The most intellectually engaging film I've seen. An awesome depiction of society and the tendencies of man.

And I appreciated how affirming it was of manhood and fatherhood, two things completely missing from American cinema today.
I haven't seen the complete movie yet. We have direct TV, and have some premium channels. I caught the last half of this movie about a month ago.
I'll have to wait to post my full "take" on the movie.

I won't watch it. I have too much interest in archaeology and every historian I have read says it's an innacurate and anachronistic pastiche of various cultures having little to do with the real Mayans.
Many people thought his Jesus movie was accurate and no historian did. I suspect it's a pattern with Mel.
Real history is a consuming and fascinating thing - why waste time with Walt Disney Lite?
Fogg - I can't speak to its accuracy but I encourage you to watch it for the subtle and not so subtle social commentary. With limited dialogue the symbolism tells a very vivid tale that transcends the period.

What movies stay true to anything on which they are allegedly based? The Mayan civilization is almost secondary to the film.
I admit to a prejudice against Mel Gibson and all his pomps and have a hard time believing anything he produced with "social commentary" in it could be free of his bigotry.
He is after all an avid supporter of the people who destroyed the libraries of the Maya, why should he portray them in the light of reality?
I read two books last year about the Mayan dynasty founded by Yax Kuk Mo, the excavation of his tomb and about the Mayan glyphs and the decoding thereof. I'm a nerd and prefer that sort of thing to fiction.
This movie was great. I saw it in the theatres a when it first came out.
