Remembering Gerald Ford
As Chris Floyd so eloquently points out, "it was Gerald R. Ford who took those famously amoral and criminally incompetent backroom operators, Donald Rumsfeld and Dick Cheney, out of the lower quadrants of the twisted bowels of the Nixon White House and raised them to the highest levels of American government, where, in one form or another, overtly and covertly, they have inflicted their primitive ideology and violent psychodramas on the nation, and the world, for more than three decades."
- Ford brought us Rumsfeld and Cheney.
- Ford pardoned Nixon, a criminal who deserved to spend his last days rotting in jail for his hatred of America.
- Ford greenlighted Indonesia's invasion of East Timor on December 7, 1975, thereby sanctioning the killing of around 200,000 Timorese -- nearly a third of East Timor's population -- thanks to several billion in military and economic support from the United States.
And we are supposed to be mourning why?

Um - because every Republican president since has been worse? W has lowered the bar so much you can pass over it by slithering on your belly through the muck and even Spiro T. Agnew looks good compared to Cheney.
Of course the other and most obvious reason is the Right Wing media.
I never liked Ford. He seemed like an uncreative dolt.
He was about as mainstream and uncreative a Politician that has ever come down the pike.
On the plus side, even he could see that Bush & co. were idiots of large proportion.
To bad he waited till he was dead to say that though, through his interview published years ago about the war being a dumb mistake. He did not have the interview released while alive. What a coward he was.
That's why I said our long national nightmare isn't over. Ford gave us Cheney and Rumsfeld and if had taken the VP spot Reagan offered him we never would have been plagued with Bush 41 or Bush 43.
Agree completely
I never really looked at it that way. I didn't know about the East Timor thing at all. I don't know if I have a short memory, or if history has a short memory. Great post.
I'm back from my hiatis, btw.
I'm not going to piss on the man's grave, but it is sobering to know the impact of decisions he made.
