White?

Is he White?

Today, I received a simple question from a colleague who practices employment law and deals with government agencies who make sure employers are not discriminating -- why are Egyptians, North Africans and other "Middle Eastern" people considered "White" for affirmative action purposes?

My only response was that this is typical of race manipulation in America. We North Africans and Arabs are considered "White" for affirmative action purposes, but not when we get to the airport.

This is not the first and will not be the last occasion on which race is manipulated in America. It just illustrates the pathetic contradictions and manipulations of race to which this society falls so easily prey.

Why can't we just do away with them?

Interesting question…

From a societal point of view, we should be trying to get to a point where race doesn’t matter… However, to reach such a place we’ll need data – and therefore categories.

I’m sure we’ll never please all the various groups, but categorization would seem to be a necessary evil.

Mr. Bombs, Jews are not members of a race. That is a religion. Only.

The concept of race is fictitious. As the Insurgent says it is used to manipulate and control people. The only actual race of humans is the humanrace.
As far as Hiv in this country , a mandatory testing once a year in a free checkup would take care of that issue for so called blacks and so called whites.

I agree with BOB and ROR - we can't go punishing some doctor because he admits that someone has a higher risk of sickle cell disease than I do or a lower risk of melanoma or cystic fibrosis than I have or that he likely to react differently to some medicines - because it's true.

There are many definitions of race, scientific and not scientific, but genetics has nothing to do with our relative value, our relative abilities, our relative rights or our relative humanity. Racism results from racists and not from race. In short I think we can safely assert the brotherhood of man without insisting that we are all identical twins.

I'm uncomfortable with, but still support Affirmative Action even though it seems to put people at a disadvantage that should not be put at a disadvantage and it sometimes seems to be another face of racism.

Affirmative action has to do with "disadvantaged" minorities and with undoing a history of injustice and yes, that's a political description subject to manipulation and misuse.

Descendants of slaves brought from Africa have an arguable right to certain advantages - not because they look African but because they descend from slaves freed only a few generations ago and legally persecuted, exploited and marginalized for at least a hundred years afterward.

Though I know it's certainly true that any immigrant is discriminated against and that darker people get it the most, that's not why the Affirmative Action idea was started for better or for worse.

I'm taking a European perspective on this, but I feel AA is an outdated concept which needs to be abolished immediately. You cannot justify past racial discrimination with continuing racial discrimination. Perhaps AA had its time, in the 70's, but Black people in America have had long enough to get a kick start to equality, which is what AA was supposed to achieve. I also feel in South Africa the BEEP is necessary for a time, but its implementation is forcing thousands of whites - in other words the holders of capital - to emigrate from that said country. And also, Captn. Fogg, I salute you. Your bolded comment is absolutely amazing and sticks to the core.

gais, capt,

I have to disagree gais: There are young people in their primes who had parents that could not go to college or get certain jobs simply because of the color of their skin. Slavery may have ended a hundred+ years ago, but formal, government sanctioned discrimination persisted until the 60's. How can you expect children to overcome such a disadvantage when their parents where denied the opportunities most people have?

However, having said I support it -- I think AA needs to be restructured: it should NOT be based on Race -- it needs to consider economics: namely, income.

Many individuals within a minority have done well in our society: the child of a middle-class or wealthy black person shouldn't qualify for AA... However, a poor family may be owed some restitution from government for prior discrimination.

Sounds good on the surface Reign of Reason ,
but... All you are doing is social engineering then, and perpetuating the status quo.
Why should education cost anything in the richest nation on Earth.? Or Health care for that matter. Or food or housing either.?
Why do we need rich and poor people at this date in human history.?
To perpetuate the class/caste system is why.
Something that should have been done away with a long time ago, and could have been done away with.

What you are saying here is to base things on income. That my friend is part of the problem , and not part of the solution.

America is going to change into another culture in the short term or else we are going to tear ourselves apart , and flush ourselves down the big Corporate toilet , which values nothing beyond the $ system.
Money is the current arbiter of all decision making. With that as the decider of all things , wrong choices pile up.
We have an opportunity to create a really great society now.
That means we have to think differently.
